ChatGPT ATS Resume Check: Prompts That Work (and Where They Fail)

Asking ChatGPT to check your resume for ATS compatibility has become one of the most common uses of AI in the job search, and it is not a bad instinct. A large language model is genuinely good at spotting missing keywords and rewriting weak bullets. But it is also genuinely bad at some things people assume it can do, like simulating how tracking software parses your file. This post gives you the prompts that work, and an honest account of where they fail.

What ChatGPT does well

Used correctly, ChatGPT is a capable keyword analyst and editor. It can extract the hard skills and qualifications from a job description, compare them against your resume text, and rewrite your bullets to include missing terms without keyword stuffing. For those jobs, the prompts below are copy-paste ready.

Four prompts that actually work

1. Extract the keywords from a job description

"Here is a job description. List the hard skills, tools, certifications, and qualifications it mentions, ranked by how many times each appears and how prominently. Output as a table with columns: term, category, importance. [paste job description]"

2. Find the gaps against your resume

"Compare my resume against this job description. List every skill or requirement in the posting that does not appear in my resume in the same or equivalent words. Flag which of these I could honestly add based on the experience I do list. [paste both]"

3. Rewrite a weak bullet

"Rewrite this resume bullet to include the term '[keyword]' naturally, keep it under 30 words, start with a strong verb, and include a quantified result: [paste bullet]"

4. Audit your phrasing for searchability

"Recruiters search their ATS with terms from their own job posting. Review my resume and flag any experience described in wording a keyword search would miss, suggesting the standard industry term for each. [paste resume]"

Where ChatGPT fails as an ATS checker

It never sees what the parser sees. When you paste your resume text into a chat, you have already done the parsing yourself. The tables, columns, headers, and graphics that break real ATS extraction are exactly the things that vanish when you copy text out of your file. ChatGPT cannot tell you that your two-column layout interleaves your work history, because it never saw the layout.

Its scores are improvised. Ask ChatGPT to "score my resume out of 100 for ATS compatibility" and it will comply, but ask twice and you will get two different numbers. The score is a plausible-sounding invention, not a measurement. We covered the wider problem of inconsistent scoring in why ATS scores disagree.

It is agreeable to a fault. General-purpose chat models tend to praise the resume in front of them and soften bad news. A screening system does not.

Privacy is on you. A resume is personal data. Pasting it into a general chat tool may feed it into conversation history and, depending on your settings, future training. Check your settings before you paste.

The honest division of labour

Use ChatGPT for what it is: a strong writing assistant. Use a purpose-built checker for what it is: a parser and scorer. The free ATS resume checker on this site reads your actual file the way tracking software does, scores it against the specific job description with a consistent method, and never stores your resume. Then take its list of missing keywords back to ChatGPT, or to our built-in rewrite suggestions, and fix the bullets. Ten minutes, both tools doing the job they are good at.

A workflow that takes ten minutes

  1. Run your resume and the job description through the resume checker to get your parse results, score, and missing keywords.
  2. Fix any formatting issues it flags in your source document.
  3. Use prompt 3 above (or the checker's own rewrite suggestions) on each weak bullet, adding the missing terms you can honestly claim.
  4. Re-check. When you clear 75, apply.
